Obama is a Christian.Barack Obama was born in 1961 in Hawaii to a non-religious household. After college in 1985 Obama accepted work as a community organizer for a group of Chicago churches that were working to address joblessness, drugs, and hopelessness in their inner-city community. [1,2]
In 2004 Obama told the Chicago Sun-Times:
"And it was in those places where I think what had been more of an intellectual view of religion deepened."I became much more familiar with the ongoing tradition of the historic black church and its importance in the community. And the power of that culture to give people strength in very difficult circumstances, and the power of that church to give people courage against great odds. And it moved me deeply." [1]
In his autobiography "The Audacity of Hope"" Obama goes on to say:
"I was finally able to walk down the aisle of the Trinity United Church of Christ one day and be baptized... kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side of Chicago, I felt God’s spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth." [2]
Since his baptism in the mid-80s Obama has been a practicing Christian. "I am a Christian," says Obama, who also unapologetically declares that he has "a personal relationship with Jesus Christ." [1]
